Names of steroid inhalers for asthma

5. Thinking a written prescription for a COPD inhaler means the patient knows when to use it: The drug's purpose. For treatment purposes all inhalers for COPD & asthma fall into one of two broad categories:

a) to provide quick relief ('rescue inhalers') and
b) to improve chronic symptoms and prevent flareups ('maintenance inhalers'). Examples of rescue inhalers are albuterol (brand names Proventil HFA, ProAir HFA, Ventolin HFA) and ipratropium bromide (brand name Atrovent). Combivent contains a combination of albuterol and ipratropium bromide. Maintenance inhalers include any inhaled steroid (IS), either alone (brand names Azmacort, Qvar, Pulmicort, etc.) or in combination with a 'long acting bronchodilator' (LABD; brand names Symbicort, Advair). PROBLEM: The SAME type of delivery device (size, shape, mechanism of action) is commonly used for both rescue and maintenance inhalers. For example, as shown below, ProAir HFA (a rescue inhaler, on left) and Symbicort (a maintenance inhaler, on right) both come packaged as pressurized metered dose inhalers, and both are deep red in color. There is nothing intuitive about this. For a patient who may have both inhalers (quite common), and who becomes short of breath, it is all too easy to forget which is which.

For children 12 years of age and older:
Two inhalations inhaled orally twice daily (morning and evening).

Each inhalation contains either 100 mcg or 200 mcg of mometasone with 5 mcg of formoterol.

Maximum Daily Dose: 800 mcg of mometasone; 20 mcg of formoterol

Comments:
-The starting dose should be determined based on patient's previous asthma therapy.
-Patients previously on inhaled medium dose corticosteroids should be started on the 100 mcg/5 mcg strength.
-Patients previously on inhaled high dose corticosteroids should be started on the 200 mcg/5 mcg strength.
-Not for use in treatment of acute bronchospasm.

Use: Indicated for patients 12 years of age and older who have inadequate control on a long-term asthma control medication or whose disease severity requires initiation of an inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist

Nebulisers are machines that turn the liquid form of your short-acting bronchodilator medicines into a fine mist, like an aerosol. You breathe this in with a face mask or a mouthpiece. Nebulisers are no more effective than normal inhalers. However, they are extremely useful in people who are very tired (fatigued) with their breathing, or in people who are very breathless. Nebulisers are used mainly in hospital for severe attacks of asthma when large doses of inhaled medicines are needed. They are used less commonly than in the past, as modern spacer devices are usually just as good as nebulisers for giving large doses of inhaled medicines. You do not need any co-ordination to use a nebuliser - you just breathe in and out, and you will breathe in the medicine.

Steroids can make pimples pop up and hair fall out. They can make guys grow breasts and girls grow beards. Steroids can cause livers to grow tumors and hearts to clog up. They can even send users on violent, angry rampages. In other words, steroids throw a body way out of whack. Steroids do make users bulk up, but the health risks are high. It's true, on steroids biceps bulge; abs ripple; and quads balloon. But that's just on the outside. Steroid users may be very pleased when they flex in the mirror, but they may create problems on the inside. These problems may hurt them the rest of their lives. As a matter of fact steroid use can shorten their lives.

Dear sir,
Thanks a lot. I am really inspired with your efforts to remove quite a lots of misconceptions about Homeopathy in general public. Many Leading Homeo drs are least interested in educating people about this. Many times i have asked my doctor ( one of the leading homeo dr in my city) and he says that it is out of jealousy people are spreading this propaganda. But my question is what is your effort in preventing this spread of false propaganda. Anyway i am really happy that, though you are always a busy person, but when approached- very mild, scientific tempered and matured person. May god give you more and more strength to spread homeopathy in a scientific spirit.
