The secretion of hypothalamic, pituitary, and target tissue hormones is under tight regulatory control by a series of feedback and feed- forward loops. This complexity can be demonstrated using the growth hormone (GH) regulatory system as an example. The stimulatory substance growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and the inhibitory substance somatostatin (SS) both products of the hypothalamus, control pituitary GH secretion. Somatostatin is also called growth hormone-inhibiting hormone (GHIH). Under the influence of GHRH, growth hormone is released into the systemic circulation, causing the target tissue to secrete insulin-like growth factor-1, IGF-1. Growth hormone also has other more direct metabolic effects; it is both hyperglycemic and lipolytic. The principal source of systemic IGF-1 is the liver, although most other tissues secrete and contribute to systemic IGF-1. Liver IGF-1 is considered to be the principal regulator of tissue growth. In particular, the IGF-1 secreted by the liver is believed to synchronize growth throughout the body, resulting in a homeostatic balance of tissue size and mass. IGF-1 secreted by peripheral tissues is generally considered to be autocrine or paracrine in its biological action.

Whey protein is the most studied supplement after Creatine. It has been proven that protein helps build muscle, with the ideal ingestion time being immediately post-workout, or in your “anabolic window.” The only protein that is able to be digested within 45 minutes is whey due to its purity and chemical properties. Whey usually comes in a few forms: Hydrolysate, Isolate and Concentrate. Isolate is more filtered, and is more quickly absorbed by the body than Concentrate. However, it is important to keep a balance of both, since your muscles have a constant demand for protein.

•    People copy the dietary practices of pro bodybuilders on androgens. Steroids enable you to assimilate far more protein than you’d normally could.
•    People based their recommendations on the flawed nitrogen balance studies back from when the world was still flat.
•    The more is better heuristic. There are so many studies showing protein is good for you, it’s hard not to think more of it is even better.
•    Supplement companies have an obvious financial incentive to make you want to believe you need more protein than you really do. There are actually several industry-sponsored studies showing absolutely miraculous benefits of consuming more protein (see for example the studies by Cribb).
•    People can’t be bothered with decimals and just round up to the nearest convenient integer, which so happens to be an easy to remember 1.

How you can eat 50 grams of protein and DIGEST 150 grams of protein..in the same day! (this is something the supplement companies will NEVER tell you)

What do saliva, gastric juice, pancreatic enzymes have to do with protein circulating your body? Find out on page 31

Find out what your stinky COLON has to do with protein levels in your body on page 31 - this will blow your mind!

Why anybody who thinks you need hundreds of grams of protein per day DON'T know a single thing about how the body works. Page 32 shows you a diagram of what protein REALLY does in your body.
